National Court Organization Announces New Board Members

Utah’s Chief Justice and Ohio Supreme Court Director Will Lead Board

Williamsburg, VA (Aug. 14, 2009) – The National Center for State Courts, a nonprofit that aims to improve the administration of justice through leadership and service to the nation’s courts, has named five new members to its Board of Directors. Each will serve a three-year term.

In addition, Utah Chief Justice Christine M. Durham has been named chair of the National Center’s Board of Directors, and Steven C. Hollon, administrative director of the Supreme Court of Ohio, has been named vice-chair. Both will serve in their positions for one year.

The new board members are:

  • Roxanne Colin, an attorney in private practice in Des Moines, Iowa, who previously served as assistant attorney general for Iowa in 1969-76 and was a U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Iowa from 1977-81;

  • Rosalyn W. Frierson, director of South Carolina Court Administration since 1998 and law clerk to former South Carolina Chief Justice Ernest A. Finney Jr. from 1993-98 and staff attorney for the South Carolina Supreme Court from 1992-93;

  • Richard C. Godfrey, a senior litigation partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP, who has been lead counsel in litigation for many national corporations including Allstate Insurance Co., Aon, General Motors, and ExxonMobil;

  • Theodore B. Olson, former U.S. solicitor general under President George W. Bush and former assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel under President Ronald Reagan, who currently practices in the Washington, D.C., office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP;

  • Eric T. Washington, chief judge of the D.C. Court of Appeals since 2005, who was a former associate judge to the D.C. Court of Appeals from 1999-2005 and former trial judge with the D.C. Superior Court from 1995-99.

The National Center for State Courts, headquartered in Williamsburg, Va., is a nonprofit court reform organization dedicated to improving the administration of justice by providing leadership and service to the state courts. The National Center, founded in 1971 by the Conference of Chief Justices and Chief Justice of the United States Warren E. Burger, provides education, training, and technology, management, and research services to the nation's state courts.
