Course Overview:
As consumers, we are all aware of how contemporary technology has changed our lives – usually for the good. This class explores how many of those technologies have been adapted for use in jury management systems. They offer tremendous opportunities to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the jury system and to make jury service a more pleasant and convenient experience for the citizens who are summonsed. But like all technological innovations, there are also some pitfalls. With careful planning and conscious attention to the principle goals of the jury system, court administrators can avoid the most common mistake – implementing technology for technology’s sake – and can make sound decisions about which technologies offer the most promise for their courts and what policies and practices must be developed to ensure that those technologies are implemented and operate as intended.

This web course is designed to:
  • Expose participants to emerging trends in jury system technology

  • Alert participants to the broader policy implications of those technologies

  • Enable participants to evaluate the jury automation systems in their own courts and identify areas in which such technologies might improve its functioning, and

  • Enable participants to select technologies and to design implementation and operational procedures that are consistent with sound principles of jury system management and that support the broader policy goals of the jury system.

The course content is presented in a series of five modules, each containing an on-line media presentation, readings, Power Point slides, resources and practice exercises. These exercises will help students evaluate the functioning of their current jury systems and make informed decisions about whether certain technologies might improve their overall performance.

Participants have access to the course materials for three months from the date of registration and payment. Participants requesting a certificate for completing the course will be required to do the following:
