Learn how to use the CourTools and the Court Performance Standards CPS as a framework to guide your court into the future by setting target performances, then monitoring, evaluating and learning from results. Learn how to introduce CourTools into your court as a means of assessing court performance and guiding the decisions of management, planning and leadership.

The Court Performance Standards are used in hundreds of courts throughout the United States and foreign countries and are widely acknowledged as “the standard” for effective judicial administration. The Court Performance Standards have been endorsed by the Conference of Chief Justices, the Conference of State Court Administrators, the National Association for Court Management, the National College of Probate Judges, the American Judges Association, the Judicial Council of California and numerous courts and court systems. The 10 CourTools are the next evolution of performance standards and are intended to provide a framework for courts to assess their performance across operations embracing both internal and external stakeholders.

This online course is designed to be self-paced and to build a sequential understanding of performance measurement and teach the skills necessary to effectively conduct performance measurement.  The course is organized into a series of 10 units containing video segments, readings, a PowerPoint presentation and a self-assessment exercise addressing unit competencies. Course assignments are reviewed by faculty with feedback to reinforce the learning objectives. Threaded discussions and email offer the opportunity to discuss performance issues with faculty and other course participants.

Participants have access to the course materials for three months from the date of registration and payment. In order to receive certification credit for Phase I of CEDP or CMP, participants will be required to do the following:

  1. Complete all self-assessment quizzes with a minimum of 70% accuracy.
  2. Complete and submit all course assignments.
  3. Complete and submit the course evaluation survey.
