Increasingly, courts are using social- and management-science research methods to address long-standing problems that have defied solution by other means. This course provides a broad overview of key research and evaluation concepts that have proven useful to courts. Participants will be able to apply concepts immediately upon returning to the job.
A variety of research and evaluation designs will be described and their strengths and weaknesses assessed. Faculty present practical methods for interpreting and presenting research results, an important but often overlooked aspect of effectively communicating research results to policy-makers. Participatory exercises and numerous examples from court research projects conducted over decades by the instructors are designed to keep participants engaged. Other evaluation topics include logic model construction, critical elements of process, outcome/impact, and cost-effectiveness evaluations. Key research techniques are demonstrated, including survey construction and administration and data analysis techniques.
This course targets court personnel interested in becoming better-informed consumers of research produced by others such as consultants, and in planning research and evaluations of their own.
