Leadership and Management in the Courts and Justice Environment

Phase II begins in February of each year and runs through June. From February through May, participants are engaged in distance learning – reading, discussing and debating issues online with members of their class and faculty. Participants are also introduced to research methods that ICM expects participants to employ during Phase III.

This course concludes in a three-week residency at the National Center for State Courts in Williamsburg, Virginia in June. While in residence, participants sharpen critical thinking and leadership skills. Participants explore the roles and purposes of courts, discuss the internal and external complexities of the environment in which they operate and, synthesize modern leadership and management theory and practice through case studies. During the residency, faculty and staff assist participants in shaping a plan for the participant’s independent study in Phase III.

Faculty

The CEDP faculty is committed to bridging academic theory and public practice. Faculty members have experience in the public sector and are regularly involved in community service, training research, or consulting with state or local courts. At the same time, they are scholars who view public affairs as a subject for analysis and evaluation in a broad social and historical context. As ICM faculty, they bring their ability to reflect critically on practical experience to the design of academic programs. Faculty accomplish this not by merely adding current case studies to reading assignments, but by regularly recasting the questions addressed by the program in light of contemporary public concerns.

This course will be conducted at the National Center for State Courts headquarters in Williamsburg, Virginia. Shuttle service will be provided between the hotel and the National Center for State Courts.
