Course Overview:
Faculty: Ernie Friesen, Barry Mahoney, John Greacen, Dan Hall, David Steelman, Gordy Griller, and leadership judges and administrators from the Superior Court of Arizona in Maricopa County, Phoenix

This short, intensive seminar will target caseflow improvement and trial court delay reduction for leadership judges, court managers and special program staff of metropolitan courts. Courts are encouraged to bring teams if they wish, including public lawyers and other justice agency officials from their local jurisdictions. Depending on attendees and their problem set, three tracks will be offered: criminal, civil and domestic relations.

Topics to be addressed include:

  • Streamlined caseflow methods
  • Early front-end settlement approaches
  • Reducing delay in the discovery process
  • How to ensure fixed and firm trial dates
  • Minimizing continuances successfully
  • Developing timely and necessary case processing information
  • Using judicial adjuncts effectively -- i.e., referees, commissioners, hearing officers
  • Identifying inefficiencies in the caseflow process
  • Reducing unnecessary hearings, events and requirements: workload vis-a-vis caseload
  • Differential case management - DCM
  • Backlog reduction techniques
  • Using technology to improve efficiency
  • Using goals and data to monitor case processing

NOTE: An optional, intensive mini-workshop focused exclusively on settlement conference scheduling, management, skills and practices for trial judges and court managers will be featured the afternoon of the second day for those who wish to attend. There is no extra registration fee for this extended event.

Hotel Information :
This course is conducted in collaboration with the Arizona Judicial Branch. The seminar will be held at the Superior Courts Trial Court Education Center, 620 West Jackson Street - Downtown Phoenix.

Hotel accommodations must be made independently by participants. Free parking is available at the Trial Court Education Center. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
