About Positions

The National Center for State Courts created and maintains “structure charts” for each state which show how cases flow through the system and how the system itself is organized. The structure and names used by the judicial branch vary state-to-state, but wherever possible, the JSRC uses the following naming conventions:

Court Levels Judge Types and Names
Courts of Last Resort Chief Judge/Justice- COLR Chiefs
  Associate Judges- COLR Associates
Intermediate Appellate Courts Presiding Judge- IAC Presiding Judge
  Associate Judges- IAC Judges
General Jurisdiction Courts Presiding Judge- GJ Presiding Judges
  Associate Judges- GJ Judges
Special/Limited Jurisdiction Courts Names and responsibilities vary widely, NCSC does not compare these from state to state.
